Description:
The Joint Stock Companies Act of 1856 provided for limited individual financial responsibility for debts of corporations. This resulted in the separation of individual and public identities of investors so that they had no fear of losing possessions to the payment of corporate debts. Novelists of the period were quick to take advantage of this economic development as material for their work and used these as a means to solve contradicting social forces. Elizabeth Gaskell's 'Cranford' does this by telling of the experiences of Matty and her reaction to an economic collapse.
