  • Description: An extraordinary event occurred last December 16 in Washington, DC: Some of the most innovative hospitals, clinics, physician groups, and other health systems in the country described how, despite all odds, they had managed to cut costs while improving care. The occasion was the "Innovations cross the Nation in Health Care Delivery" conference organized by Health Affairs with the support of twelve sponsors and featuring a keynote address from Richard Gilifilan, MD, acting director of the new Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI). A powerful theme that emerged at the conference was aptly summed up by one participant: They don't need new resources in the health system; it's about refocusing the ones that they have. The innovation center chief stressed that achieving "spread capacity was a key goal, and participants agreed that CMMI should set up a national "learning network" to extend knowledge nationwide.
